| Abstract | Abstract The effect of terminal polar and nonpolar substituents on the thermodynamic stability of the mesophase is discussed. Mesomeric as well as steric effects influence the packing of the molecules and consequently the clearing point. It is necessary to consider the effect of substituents in connection with the nature of the rigid core. The influence of molecular association and conformational equilibria on the stability of the mesophase is described. Isolated electron densities lead to repulsions between neighbouring molecules, thus destabilizing the mesophase and the layered structure if present. |
