Abstract	The present study seeks to understand the forms of communication that are presented in the interactions of the institutionalized elderly with their interlocutors, through the communicative effectiveness, being this the fulfillment of communicative acts of the participants in the interaction and with a subjective component . The research is based on a mixed method which combines a quantitative and a qualitative component through a nested or embedded or concurrent design of the dominant model (DIAC), in order to obtain a broader and deeper perspective of the phenomenon to be studied. There were 22 elderly people between 75 and 92 years old; And 13 interlocutors, where professional and non-professional caregivers were involved, ranging in age from 17 to 57 years of age. The participation of the interlocutor is key for the interaction with the elderly people is promoted, as well as the interest, motivation and collaboration on the part of these so that the communication is presented in a functional and effective way. In this research it was possible to show that there is a lack of tools or strategies on the part of the interlocutors who benefit from communication with the elderly, since despite the fact that the elderly person presents some deficiency, if the partner has the necessary resources to encourage communication With the elderly person, can reach a communicative effectiveness
