| Abstract | This work argues about the portuguese pedagogical contest on education, in particular, referred to the organization and the diffusion of the public instruction in Portugal in the middle of the XIXth century. Since the fifties, an intensification of the discussion about the teaching methods and techniques occurred, and this was expressed in many registers, form articles and periodicals of this epoch till the recommendations of the school inspectors. The proposition was to modernize and standardize physically and symbolically the classroom. Finally, the contemporaries were asking for innovations, looking for the social efficiency of the schooling institution. In such a way, step by step, within the portuguese social formation specificity, the roots of the universal school, wich was characterizing the occidental modernity, was being created. |
