| Abstract | Identitication of Risk Factors for Crashes Involving Older Drivers by Nagasujana M. Pulugurtha Shashi Nambisan, Ph.D., P.E., Examination Committee Chair Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering University of Nevada, Las Vegas The focus of thesis is to evaluate the role of geometric features and traffic operations related characteristics on the involvement of the older drivers in motor vehicle crashes. Examples of potential factors influencing older driver crashes include intersection/ roadway geometries, type of traffic control, traffic signal phasing, light conditions. A methodology is developed to model older driver involvement in crashes. Data from Clark County, Nevada, are used to demonstrate the application of the methodology. The region has seen more than a 85 percent increase in elderly population during the last decade. Crash data from 1998 to 2002 are used. Other data required include demographic data for the study area and number of licensed drivers by gender and age group, vehicle miles of travel, and passenger miles of travel. The results of the proposed research are valuable for identifying factors related to the involvement of older drivers in motor vehicle crashes. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
