| Abstract | Being an a p p l i c a t i o n area of programming languages, g r a p h i c s languages should keep pace with the development of today's programming languages. Data types, s t r u c t u r a l o p e r a t i o n s and f r e e layout of statements p r o v i d e a more e f f e c t i v e means of p i c t u r e g e n e r a t i o n , i . e . , mod e l l i n g , r e n d e r i n g and viewing. The G r a p h i c a l Kernel System (GKS), an i n t e r n a t i o n a l standard g r a p h i c s language s i n c e 1984, i s s p e c i f i e d on a subroutine b a s i s , t h e r e f o r e s u f f e r i n g from the la c k of such h i g h l e v e l language f e a t u r e s . T h i s t h e s i s i n v e s t i g a t e s and implements the FORTRAN language b i n d i n g of GKS i n t o a h i g h l e v e l programming language (HL/GKS) by a generated pre c o m p i l e r . The weaknesses and r e s t r i c t i o n s of GKS and i t s FORTRAN b i n d i n g are d i s c u s s e d . The advanced f e a t u r e s and f u n c t i o n s of HL/GKS are addressed. The g r a p h i c a l syntax and semantics r u l e s of the extended p o r t i o n of HL/GKS are in t r o d u c e d . I t i s expected t h a t HL/GKS w i l l have more a t t r a c t i v e f e a t u r e s and e f f e c t i v e p r o d u c t i v i t y f o r GKS a p p l i c a t i o n s compared to the p r o c e d u r e l e v e l GKS system. The input statements of HL/GKS have the c a p a b i l i t y of p i c t u r e communication by i n t e r a c t i v e d e v i c e s and hence enable the implementation of s o p h i s t i c a t e d g r a p h i c a l a p p l i c a t i o n programs. |
