| Abstract | El presente estudio se realiza con el proposito de conocer la relacion entre la presencia de caries y pH salival en personas con Sindrome de Down. La muestra estuvo comprendida por dos grupos, un grupo incluyo pacientes con Sindrome de Down que asisten al Instituto Privado de Educacion Especial Corrientes (IPEEC) y un grupo control no portadores del sindrome, con edades comprendidas de entre 13 y 26 anos, (ambos con similar distribucion de edad y sexo). Los resultados obtenidos en relacion al Indice Gingival arrojaron en los pacientes con sindrome de Down un valor de 2 y un 56% en el indice de O'Leary; en el grupo control el 64% obtuvo valores mayores a 1 en el Indice Gingival y un 49% en el de placa, ambos resultados no compatibles con salud. Respecto de la condicion de salud bucal, en los dos grupos se obtuvieron valores del indice de caries (CPOD) superiores a 4.5 considerandose elevado segun la OMS. El pH en los pacientes con sindrome de Down vario entre 5 y 7, siendo el intervalo de referencia normal 6,5. Los resultados del estudio estan orientados a la prevencion y promocion de la Salud con la Educacion y concientizacion de este grupo vulnerable.. The present study was performed in order to know the relationship between the presence of dental caries and salivary pH in people with Down syndrome. The sample was comprised of included two groups, one group included patients with Down syndrome attending at Private Institute of Special Education, Corrientes (IPEEC) and a control group, (both of them aged between 13 and 26 years, and similar distribution of age and sex). The results obtained in Gingival Index were: 2 in Down syndrome patients and 56% in the O'Leary Index while in the control group 64% had values greater than 1 for Gingival index and 49% for the Plaque index, both results were not compatible with health. Regarding the oral health condition in both groups, the caries index (CPOD) presented values above 4.5 that is considered high rate, according to WHO. The pH ranged from patients with Down syndrome was between 5 and 7, being the normal reference range 6.5. The results of the study are aimed to prevention and health promotion in the education and awareness of this vulnerable group. |
