| Abstract | The aim of this thesis is to explore the management of traumatic events experienced by Quebec' s police officers patrol officers, detectives and S W A T units in their work. It condenses a mixed methodology of survey (n=267), interviews(n=54) and observation (n=l) in order to analyse the nature and frequency of these traurnatic events. It also considers how the management of traurnatic events is modulated by formaI and/or informaI resources of working organizations and relations between actors. The results indicate that 32% of police officers have experienced various traumatic events in their work: deadly road accident (14,28%), discovery of corpse (15,38%), road pur suit (6,60%), colleague's death (6,60%), arrest of non controlled people (6%), deadly accident involving children (5,50%),gunshot (5,50%), attack and act of violence against police officers (5,50%) and death of suspects during operation (5,50%). However, different practices exist despite the type of service where police officers work and the manager style. Besides, geographic distance and professional culture seem to act upon the quality of management of traumatic events inside the police departments. Nevertheless, the results demonstrate that even if formaI resources are used during the management of traumatic events, the informaI management is essential. In both cases, their quality depends, in aIl or partially, on the type of |
