| Abstract | The Middle Pleistocene mammal fossils assemblage of the “Cueva de los Huesos” from Obón (Teruel). The mammal fossils assemblage of the Middle Pleistocene, Cueva de los Huesos from Obón (Teruel) is herein studied. The following macromammal species have been recognized: Crocuta crocuta, Canis lupus, Vulpes cf. vulpes, Felis silvestris, Meles meles, Stephanorhinus hemitoechus, Equus cf. mosbachensis, Bison cf. schoetensacki, Capra sp. and Cervus elaphus ssp. Of the biostratigraphic study, comparing this faunas with other similar aged Iberian and European faunas, there is estimated an approximate age for the site of around 400-300 ky. Preliminary taphonomic interpretation suggests that hyenas had an important contribution to the accumulation of the bony remains at the site. The palaeoecological interpretation inferred from the fauna indicate the existence of an open forest, alternating with areas of grasslands and wetlands. |
