| Abstract | Due to the demand for high data rate systems to meet recent and future development in wireless technology, such as 4G, 5G and LTE, this has led many authors to investigate the performance of Free Space Optical (FSO) communications due to its ability for producing high data rate systems. Free Space Optical communications has the ability to offer 1-2 Gbits/sec over disatnces ranging between 15 km, it is also cost effective and needs no licensing for deployment. However, FSO performance is affected by channel turbulance (fading), weather conditions and pointing errors which can severly degarade the system performance. In this thesis, performance of multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) FSO system is considered, where the channel statistics is assumed to be quasi static, thus, allowing the channel statistics to be viewed as being constat over at least a couple of symbols. The optical signal is defferentially encoded phase shift keying (DEPSK) signal with heterodyne detection in which the phase noise between at least two consecutive symbols is ignored in the analysis. It is assumed that the optical signal is tarnsmitted |
