The College of William and Mary in Virginia May, 1989 Chairman: Professor James M. Yankovich The purpose of t h i s study was to inves t iga te the fac to rs th a t a f f e c t the pers is tence of re -en t ry women over age twenty-five a t an urban s ta te univers i ty using Vincent T in to’s academic-social f i t theory of re ten t ion and pers is tence which pos i ts th a t once th i s f i t i s achieved, pers is tence and re ten t ion wil l be pos i t ive ly a ffected . The re -en t ry women’ s population at Urban S ta te University , an h i s t o r i c a l l y black un ivers i ty , was studied. I t was chosen because of i t s mission of serving special populations, i t s s ize , i t s h i s to r ic a l prominence, and i t s loca t ion in an urban community. Urban S ta te University had an avai lable pool of e igh ty-e igh t women over age twenty-f ive who were academically c l a s s i f i e d as "seniors" for the 1988 f a l l semester. They were sent surveys containing academic and social adjustment fac to rs found in the l i t e r a t u r e tha t may a f fec t pe rs is tence . Forty-six re -en t ry women responded to the survey. The survey contained demographic data , academic fac to rs (pr ior educational experiences, o r ien ta t io n , c la ss attendance, c la s s assignments, study hab i ts , t u t o r i a l s , counseling, advising and career p lans) , and social fac to rs (younger classmates, classmates t h e i r ages, family members, husband/mate, campus organizat ions, university-sponsored cu l tu ra l a c t i v i t i e s , employment, day care and t r an sp o r ta t ion . ) Based on the data , i t was concluded th a t the academic and social fac tors had no e f f e c t on the population o f re -en t ry women who responded to the survey; however, o r ien ta t ion and classmates twenty-five years and older were the responses with the highest percentages in the academic and social adjustment f ac to r s . Data were inconclusive as to what f ac to rs other than perhaps se l f-motiva t ion and determination pos i t ive ly a f fe c t s pe rs is tence . Further study is needed to evaluate what spec i f ic fac to rs p o s i t iv e ly a f fec t re -en t ry women’s pers is tence . |
