Abstract	The present work consists of a taxonomic synopsis of the family Sapotaceae in Rio das Ostras municipality, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil (22o31’37”S and 41o56'42"W). The aim was to identify and catalogue the species of the local flora. Botanical collections, field observations and morphological studies were done for identification, description of the plant species, also supported by the literature and analysis of specimens from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo herbaria. It was verified the occurrence of about 18species of 7 genera: Pouteria Aubl. (P. bangii,P. grandiflora,P. macahensis, P. psammophila,P. aff. reticulata, P. torta e P. venosa), Chrysophyllum L. (C. imperiale, C. flexuosum,C. januariense e C. splendens), Diploon Cronq. (D. cuspidatum), Ecclinusa Mart.(E. ramiflora), Manilkara Adan. (M. subsericea), Micropholis (Griseb) Pierre (M. gardneriana e M. guyanensis) e Sideroxylon L. (S. obtusifolium). The taxonomic treatment includes an illustrated key for identification of the species, commentary on the morphology of the species, on their natural habitats, and of their conservation status according to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN)
