| Abstract | One of the areas of environmental sustenance is in the area of conservation of the vegetative cover. Both governments and non-governmental organisations have been spearheading the call for conservation of the vegetative cover of the earth as one of the means of sustaining the environment. To support this goal, revegetation campaigns have been carried out at various levels and places. However, these efforts can only be prosecuted in an organised manner if there is a means of identifying places that either needs attention or where the effort is failing. Continuous mapping of the vegetation condition of a place is a sure means of monitoring these efforts. Vegetation mapping in Nigeria however, has not been prosecuted regularly as should have been the case. One of the reasons behind this is the cost of such a project. In this paper, a cost-effective means of mapping Nigerian vegetation as a means of monitoring the environment from a Remote Sensing approach is presented. The various tools for mapping vegetation from satellite images are ex-rayed and suggestions on a programme of monitoring the vegetation are proffered as a means of sustaining the environment. |
