| Abstract | The application of industrial computed tomography (CT) for the geometrical characterization of work pieces within the scope of quality assurance processes is growing rapidly. When planning the execution of a specific measurement task, the user has to make decisions about the values of parameters that directly influence the image quality and therefore the measurement result. Due to the large number of parameters, the planning and setup processes can be very time consuming. The complex relationships between this parameters and the measurement result makes the planning process strongly dependent on the experience of the user, leading frequently to a trial-and-error setup approach. Based on this context, the purpose of this research is to demonstrate that the process for defining the setup parameters can be sistemized in order to obtain better results in terms of measurement uncertainty and measurement time, without the need of a iterative approach. Therefore, users with less knowledge, time and experience would also be able to get robust measurements from CT systems. Since the definition of a quality index is an essencial requirement for the comparability of the results, an important contribution of this thesis is to assess the quality of the CT extracted data by the analysis of extracted integral features. A systematic experimental approach combined the proposed quality index resulted in the structuring a set of rules and recommendations to assist users on the selection of the setup parameters. The information provided by the systematic approach for selection of setup parameters is complementary to a framework project aiming in developing support systems to help CT users in selecting adequate setup parameters; assisting manufactures on the optimization of their CT systems; and assisting researchers on quantifying sources of measurement errors. |
