| Abstract | In the dead of an Antarctic winter, relations at an Australian base went mutinously wrong He (the station leader) was not the sort of person who expected to win popularity contests. As a leader he thought things through, took a decision and then made an announcement. He believed in rules, pinned notices on board and liked working alone. He seemed not to grasp the idea of collegiate or consultative management. Being disliked didn’t worry him and it was almost as though he thought that better leaders made tougher decisions which upset people and made you unpopular. In his mind, effective management was inextricably linked to unpopularity. (Sydney Morning Herald, October 16, 1999) |
