| Abstract | This study examines the socio-residential city of Vina del Mar in the early 21st century and the changes in urban history, specifically during 1992-2002, identifying the main components that characterize the city and the factors associated to its production. Since the beginning, Vina del Mar has been in advantage within the national context in the rates the State has used to measure the level of welfare of its residents. This position has been demonstrated particularly over the last decade of the 20th century. However, during the same period, the city has faced the consolidation and emergence of urban phenomena, which compromise its well-being in the future. It has been demonstrated that the social inequality, the demographic transition and the residential mobility of Vina del Mar’s society, systematically recorded in official statistics of the State of Chile, in combination, have left a distinctive mark among its neighborhoods. The urban growth forms experienced regarding expansion and densification paradoxically have impacted the residential social structure, which is evidenced in estimated segregation rates of different socioeconomic groups. |
