Abstract	Pretende-se, com este artigo, estudar os asilos femininos existente em Lisboa na transicao do seculo XIX para o seculo XX - com uma particular atencao ao Asilo D. Pedro V – tendo em conta os pressupostos pedagogicos e sociais que fundamentavam a sua organizacao e actividade. A finalidade de preparar meninas pobres para uma vida de trabalho e de honestidade, em harmonia com o lugar social a que estavam destinadas, era plenamente assumida. Dai que o papel educativo do trabalho fosse bastas vezes realcado, surgindo a chamada educacao domestica como uma area de formacao relevante. Pretendia-se, ainda, evitar que essas jovens se transformassem num elemento social perturbador. Estava subjacente a estas instituicoes, em termos gerais, um projecto de regeneracao moral por via da educacao. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: asilo, educacao domestica, modernidade pedagogica. ABSTRACT: The following article pretends to present a study of the feminine asylums existents in Lisbon between the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century – with a particular attention to the D. Pedro V asylum - in what concerns the pedagogical and social ideology that act as a base for its organization and activity. The goal of preparing poor girls for a life of work and honesty, according with the social role destined for them is clearly present, enhancing the educational role of work, with a greater importance on the institutions where the so called household education appears as a relevant area of formation. Another one of the main purposes of these institutions relates to the area of social control: education as a tool of impediment for women to become a distressful social element, therefore being subjacent to these institutions a project of moral regeneration by means of education.
