Abstract	This article addresses the issue of family ties and emotional reactions that are established with child(as) in cognitively disabling condition mental retardation in Colombia. Theoretical references on the subject of cognitive impairment are reviewed, making emphasis on the legal framework and the Law 1098: Code for Children and Adolescents 2006.De likewise mentioned policies that protect this population, giving know the importance of comprehensive intervention from the area of social work, providing tools to families living with children in these special conditions for improving their quality of life, we rely on the systems approach which provides the possibility of a broader vision within the family.
