| Abstract | Background. Renal carcinoma represents 2.5% of the neoplasms of the kidney and 85% of the primary renal tumors. There have been described several types of these tumors, the more common subtype is the renal clear cell carcinoma (RCC). The aim of this study was to describe the pathological and morphological characteristics in a series of RCCs from Medica Sur Hospital. Material and methods. This is a descriptive study of RCCs that were reviewed from nephrectomies, in a 15 years period (1999-2014). Results. The greatest dimension of the tumor was 30 cm and the smaller was 2 cm, 60.2% of the cases had nuclear grade of 2, 35.1% showed necrosis, 44.6% had extension to the perirrenal adipose tissue and the 27% was extended into the Gerota's fascia. Infiltration to the blood vessels was showed in the 39.4% and venous tumoral thrombus in the 23%. The tumor was spread through the renal sinus in 16.2%, there was lymph node dissection in 25.7% and it was observed adrenal gland in 39.9%. Conclusion. This is the first study which describes the morphological characteristics of the clear cell renal carcinomas in Mexican population, the results show that some of these characteristics have more aggressive behavior when they are compared with some reports from the literature. A relation among the nuclear grade with the tumoral size, necrosis and extrarrenal dissemination also was identified. |
