| Abstract | The objective of this research was to document the actions taken by employees of the San Juan de Dios hospital in defence of the public interest from 1999-2015, through analysis of the effects of Law 100 of 1993 on the commercialization of health care, causingf the national hospital crisis and the subsequent abandonment of the San Juan de Dios hospital, which then became the context and theatre of actions of resistance by the employees. Further to this, the aims of their actions and their structure of organization were identified together with a profiling of the actors. To this end the voices of the actors were taken as the epistemological base, characterized by recognition of processes of emancipation and participation, as well as taking a critical social focus, based on actions directed at questioning the effects of the reigning power structures. The research thus is qualitative and brings into focus an understanding of the social dynamics and realities of the employees, whilst it is also descriptive, providing a characterization and description of the package of actions of resistance taken by the employees. The methods used, therefore, for information gathering were participant observation, semi-structured interview, focus group and research workshop. The latter was complemented by use of qualitative information analysis tools. Finally, the research work describes the employees' actions as resistance initiatives constructed with the objective of promoting the defence of public rights by establshing recognition of the political, social and cultural importance of the hospital |
