Abstract	The paper presents the characteristics of the multibeam echosounder, its technical capabilities and some maritime as well as inland waters applications. The effect of the sound speed to depth measurements accuracy for the outer beams of the multibeam echosounder have been presented. Multibeam data obtained by polish navy survey ship ORP Arctowski have been used in the paper. Furthermore authors provide information on how methods and techniques of depth measurements evolved over the centuries.
