| Abstract | Four types of sensory hairs have been identified on the antennules of Carcinus maenas: aesthetascs, guard hairs, short and long mechanoreceptors. Furthermore sensory areas are located in small cuticular cavities. The aesthetascs are implanted on most of the antennular segments; they do not display any sexual dimorphism during growth. Each is innervated by a particular ganglion, the axons of which join the antennular nerve. Although cuticular permeability is very striking, no pores could be observed. The aesthetascs seem well adapted for chemoreception; the other hairs for mechanoreception. |
