| Abstract | The high speed rail allows the recovery of the competitive value of the railroad, which was lost in the second half of the twentieth century. His suitability for the needs of the demand of middle and long distance trips was also questioned. The growth of transport demand due to demographic and economic expansion necessitates upgrading the railway system, but is it enough to improve and remodel the existing lines, or is it necessary to create new high-speed lines? There is also a concern about the end of conventional existing regional trains due to its low quality service compared to high-speed services, so it is important to check the effects of the high speed on the short distances. This paper will discuss this and other aspects, such as the comparative situation of conventional rail and its competence, the development of the rail system and the influence of regional high speed on the demand for railway transport in all its forms. The primary objective is therefore to see the need for regional high-speed services to cover society's mobility. |
