| Abstract | The Institute of Medicine has been instrumental in providing guidance for identifying the contributors to the quality issues within the health care system. Their report, entitled “Crossing the Quality Chasm: A new health system for the twenty-first century” acknowledges that there exists a huge gap or chasm between the health care that we have and the potential health care that we could have. Through the efforts of the IOM, health care professionals, organizations, policy makers, and patients are becoming more familiar with the shortcomings of the nation’s current system and the importance of finding new and better approaches to meeting the health care needs of all Americans. |
