| Abstract | Using panel data (HSB & NLSY) and measures of occupation-specific skills (DOT), this paper explores the structure of labor market outcomes associated with early endowments of cognitive and non-cognitive skills. High school sports participants and students with high math scores are known to earn more as young adults. This analysis documents relationships between early endowments and later outcomes over the life cycle. Conditional on cognitive endowments, high school sports participants earn more and have faster career progress. Sports participants with strong cognitive endowments tend to sort to occupations with particularly high earnings and high levels of responsibility for interpersonal tasks, especially as a cohort matures.
