| Abstract | In this paper the main motives and images in the lyrics of the great 18th century Turkmen poet Magtymguly Pyragy are analyzed. The Turkmens consider him to be their most famous poet, national leader because he, in bloody times of civil wars and outside threats, called separated tribes to unity, and sung of the history, nature, culture and mentality of native people. The impact of Sufism on Magtymguly’s creative works, the leading role of love motives, the synthesis of concrete-sensual and abstract-symbolic categories in his works are analyzed.
