| Abstract | The optimism in a favourable outcome of the peace process in the DRCongo has been tempered by outbursts of violence in the eastern part of the country. The warp and weft of regional (Ugandan and Rwandan) and local influences has created a complex interplay of shifting political alliances and economic interests. This article tries to understand the outburst of violence in Ituri (see map). The first part tries to disentangle the strategic considerations of the rebel movements and militias. The second part sheds light on the link between the exploitation of natural resources and the armed conflict. Finally, we show how, beyond the involvement of Uganda and Rwanda, long-standing conflicts over control of land and property rights prop up and fuel the conflict that disrupted a fragile interethnic texture in a region where ethnic alliances range over the borders of countries. |
