Abstract	A multiplicity of interactive factors presents a big challenge to the planers of order picking systems. To accomplish this challenge experience and appropriate means such as the progress simulation is needed. For the use in the phasis of rough planning simulation models have to be created and adapted quickly. Systematics for the development of simulation models to study heterogeneous picking systems are presented as an example in this paper. Based on this a planning software has been developed that allows a quick creation of simulation models. The practical application is illustrated by the results of a layout planning for a mail order company.
