| Abstract | Research literature on the impact of mass media on suicide supports the hypothesis that media reporting can trigger an imitative behavior in certain individuals under certain circumstances. However, responsible reporting can have a protective effect and help to prevent suicide. This study analyzes if the most read online newspapers in Spain follow the recommendations published by the World Health Organization in 2008 about how the media should report on suicide. The method used is content analysis, carried out in 148 pieces of news published over a time period of six months (October 2015 / March 2016). The conclusions show that some recommendations are much more followed than others and that there are not substantial differences among the four analyzed newspapers. The stories related to celebrities are more likely to include sensationalist or inappropriate language. |
