| Abstract | respiratory and urinary tract infections are an important reason for consultation in general medicine. the management of these conditions should thus be well-understood by the general practitioner, especially at the present time when rationalizing the use of antibiotics, due to increased resistance and decreased market availability of new antibiotics. nasopharyngitis and bronchitis are primarily viral infections, the treatment of which is symptomatic. in most cases, these infections resolve spontaneously over a week’s time. If symptoms persist beyond this time frame, bacterial infection is likely to be present: it is only then that antibiotics should be prescribed, with a treatment duration from 5 to 7 days. While urinary tract infection is common, distinction must be made between simple and complicated urinary tract infection based on the presence of risk factors. Both simple and complicated urinary tract infections may lead to severe sepsis. e. coli remains the main pathological agent responsible for urinary tract infections. Of note is that asymptomatic bacteriuria is common, especially in elderly women. Screening and treatment are only indicated in pregnant women, as well as in those patients scheduled to undergo urinary tract instrumentation. Cystitis is often a recurrent disease, and medical advice must thus be provided to forestall its recurrence. |
