| Abstract | The increasing concern for educational quality brings the search for teaching models that cater for certain paradigms and known deficiencies of traditional methods. Among the varieties of studies lies the one that tries to find ways to bond the professor’s teaching style to the heterogeneous public of students. The aim of this essay is to describe the Chemical Engineering and Food Engineering students’ diverse profiles, by applying the ILS test (Index of Learning Styles) based on the Felder & Silverman’s Learning Styles Model. This questionnaire brings a learning profile defined by four characteristics from a total of eight, with different intensity levels (strong and moderate preferences, and balanced on the two dimensions of the scale). It was used in nine classes, between the years of 1997 and 2005, with a total of 290 pupils. The essay also makes use of descriptive and statistical analysis of data, which was simulated for discussion of the study group under different perspectives: general view, styles for genders, for grade performances by individuals and classes, and for repeated tests of students who failed. For some chosen results, comparisons with the professor’s characteristics and the pupils’ predominant styles were also made, for the verification of influences of the environment over the students’ style. A predominant profile for the sample was determined (Sensing-Visual) and a study about the ILS questions that had a superior proportion of answers pro one of the styles is presented. |
