| Abstract | Background: 1) Compression stocking are commonly used postoperatively after Coronary Aorta Bypass Surgery (CABG). There is limited evidence about its benefits. 2) Evidencebased Knowledge is a relevant and important topic. Practice varies across small areas. Purpose: 1) Examine if use of compression stocking for 4-6 weeks after CABG-surgery reduces the incidence of surgical wound infection at harvest site. 2) Discuss the concept of evidence and different methods of developing valid knowledge Method: Data are from the Norwegian National Hospital Register for Surveillance of Surgical Site Infections, also base for report to Norwegian Surveillance System for Health Care Associated Infections (NOIS). All patients undergoing CABG from 1. September 2011 to 31. December 2012 were included, total 377 patients. The end point was surgical site infection yes/no. The idea that the use of compression stocking could reduce the incidence of harvest site infection was tested by logistic regression. Results: The relationship between infection/not infection in patients with and without stocking, Pearsons Chi square test: p = ,813 ergo not significant. Controlled for BMI, diabetes, steroids, cardiopulmonary bypass time and total hospital stay gave the same result, but BMI turned out to be significant p = ,028. In a logistic explanatory model including stocking, EuroSCORE and five factors (produced by factor analysis of a large number of frequently used explanatory variables) nothing was significant. Conclusion: The present study did not show that compression stocking reduced the incidence of harvest site infection after Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery. As discussed in the “refleksjonsoppgave” analysis of observational data can be a suitable alternative to RCT in questions of effect. |
