| Abstract | This study was intended to investigate the critical reading levels of the 5 th class students according to gender differences and educational background of their family. A total of 185 5 th grade students who were chosen randomly from the students of primary schools in Bursa were participated in the study. This was regarded as a descriptive study. Data was collected by a critical reading scale which determines the critical reading skills of students developed by Unal (2006). Significance of the difference between genders and family educational background was examined with t-test and One-Way Anova test. According to the results of the study, critical reading skills of students haven't increased with the family educational background but there is a meaningful difference between genders in favor of the girls. SUMMARY Purpose: In the 21st. Century which is called as "the era of knowledge" it is very important the acquisition of knowledge either for individuals or societies and the purpose is not only to gain knowledge, but also to use and profit by it. For this purpose knowledge has to be inquired in terms of its accuracy, because improvement of new knowledge is depended upon interpretation and inquisition of old ones. For handling these skills activity of reading has a great importance. Critical reading is defined as thinking of the individual on the reading material, assessment of it and doing this according to her/his opinions (Ozdemir,2002). Darch ve Kameenui (1987), defined critical reading as the ability to make judgments and inferences, to perceive the differences between fact and opinions and finally recognize the author's perspective. The main problem of this study was to analyze the critical reading level of the primary school students. In terms of this general problem the purpose of the study was to test the differences between critical reading scores of the students according to gender and the educational level of fathers and mothers. Methods: This was a descriptive research. The participants were chosen randomly from the 5 th . grade students of two primary schools. 185 students (78 girls, 107 boys) were asked to reply a "Critical Reading Scale" which was developed by Unal (2006). The reliability coefficient of this 22 items scale was 0.88 (α=.88). Then the scores of the students were calculated and the data was analyzed by means of SPSS (10.0). T-test was used for analyzing the difference between of the students' scores in terms of gender, One-Way Anova test was used for analyzing the difference between of the students' scores according to the educational level of their mothers and fathers. Results: The analysis of the data was revealed that there was not a significant difference between the critical reading scores of the students according to the educational level of their fathers and mothers. This means that the educational level of parents does not have any positive effect on the critical reading skills of the students. This result was interpreted as related to the negative effects of watching TV in almost all families for long hours. Critical reading scores of girls were found to be significantly higher than boys'. This result seemed similar to other studies performed in other countries. Discussion and Conclusions: It was proposed to the teachers to arrange in-service educational courses about critical reading. In Turkey the studies on critical reading is only a few. It is needed more studies on this field and developing programs for improving these skills. |
