| Abstract | The objective of this work was to select coffee plants with high production, drought tolerance and resistance to rust. The selections were made in F1 hybrids obtained by crossing plants of Coffea arabica cultivars with introductions of Ethiopia (Geisha and Wush-Wush) and other sources. The evaluations were conducted under field conditions to drought tolerance through the swelling index (IT) and rust using a five-point scale. The results led to the following conclusions: 1) The coffee F1 plants H8089-1 and H8089-4 derived from the cross of ‘Catuai Vermelho IAC 24’ with Geisha had high drought tolerance and optimum yield on average 16 harvests (42.85 and 64.29 bags/ha/year, respectively. 2) The coffee F1 plants H8114-3 and H8114-8 derived from the cross of ‘Catuai Vermelho IAC81’ with Wush-Wush had high drought tolerance and high yield on average of 16 harvests (70.48 and 58.57 bags/ha/year, respectively). 3) The ‘Catuai Vermelho IAC 81’ showed excellent drought tolerance and yield of 37.62 bags of green coffee per hectare per year, on average of 16 harvests). 4) The coffee F1 plant H8421-5, derived from the cross of the cultivar Mundo Novo IAC 471-5 with BA10, had good drought tolerance, high rust resistance and excellent yield (44.29 bags/ha/year). 5) The coffee tree H8187-3, with tall stature, derived the cross of ‘Acaia IAC 474-7’ with BA10, exhibited good drought tolerance, high rust resistance and excellent yield (50,00 bags/ha/year). |
