| Abstract | Digital publications are acquiring an ever larger role in the academic environment as well as for the general public. In light of the rapid technological transformations in the area of hardware and software, maintaining the society's digital cultural and scientific heritage means that libraries, among others, are faced with a new responsibility: Long-term preservation (in German: LZA) for ensuring the permanent accessibility of acquired, collected and self-produced digital resources. This article outlines the ways in which the Bavarian State Library (BSB) is linked with regional and national programs for long-term preservation - a task only possible as a collective undertaking. This is followed by a detailed description of the tried and proven practice of archiving the library's own digitizations. A newly initiated pilot project for long-term preservation will now extend previous experience in this area to the wide-range spectrum of digital holdings. Finally, the article presents the BSB's efforts and potential future steps toward preserving data-storage media. |
