| Abstract | The existing variation in the use of the infinitive + pronoun (amarle/amalle) in Golden Age Spanish is a phenomena that is noted much more than it is dealt with by scholars. It is true that in all the historical manuals about Spanish the mentioned variation is noted but, generally speaking, the description goes no farther than a mere citation, or, at best, gives a few dispersed notes about it. Bearing this in mind, in this article we seek to develop an analysis of the use of the two variant forms of infinitive + pronoun—with and without the palatalization—in a group of colonial documents from the western part of what makes up Bolivia today. Our purpose it to describe not only the chronology of its use in the area, but, more importantly, to set forth the criteria that can determine the appearance of one possibility or the other. |
