Abstract	o a b v n i s w m o t p i BSTRACT t is the position of the American ietetic Association that successful eight management to improve verall health for adults requires a ifelong commitment to healthful ifestyle behaviors emphasizing susainable and enjoyable eating pracices and daily physical activity. iven the increasing incidence of verweight and obesity along with the scalating health care costs associted with weight-related illnesses, ealth care providers must discover ow to effectively treat this complex ondition. Food and nutrition profesionals should stay current and killed in weight management to asist clients in preventing weight gain, ptimizing individual weight loss inerventions, and achieving long-term eight loss maintenance. Using the merican Dietetic Association’s Evience Analysis Process and Evidence nalysis Library, this position paper resents the current data and recomendations for weight management. he evidence supporting the value of ortion control, eating frequency, eal replacements, and very-low-enrgy diets are discussed as well as hysical activity, behavior therapy, harmacotherapy, and surgery. Pubic policy changes to create environents that can assist all populations o achieve and sustain healthful lifetyle behaviors are also reviewed. Am Diet Assoc. 2009;109:330-346.
