| Abstract | Skulls of South American Triassic cynodonts of distinctive phylogenetic positions were analyzed by C.T. Scanning for a comparative study of the respective nasal cavities and braincases, aiming to discuss their physiological and evolutionary roles specially regarding to the arising of the endothermy in synapsids. Specimens of Massetognathus pascuali (PV0968T), Exaeretodon riograndesis (PV0715T), Prozostrodon brasiliensis (PV0248T), Riograndia guaibensis (PV0596T and PV0601T), Brasilodon quadrangularis (PV0628T) and Brasilitherium riograndensis (PV0760T) were scanned, as well as a skull of Didelphis, an extant mammal with a primitive cranial morphology, used for comparisons. A discussion about the current hypotheses on the origin of endothermy is presented too. The C.T. scan images were digitally processed to generate 3D reconstitutions of the skulls and their endocasts, from which some areal and volumetric measurements were obtained. The morphological aspects of the nasal cavity of the studied cynodonts, very close to the mammalian condition and indicating high respiratory rates, confirm the endothermic metabolic status attributed to eucynodonts by some authors. Thus, all the anatomical and physiological adaptations related to endothermy could also be already present in Triassic cynodonts. On the other hand, a significant encefalization was observed only in Riograndia and the brasilodontids, suggesting a negative correlation between this physiological feature and the enhancement of the respiratory rates and indicating that the later evolved earlier than the former. |
