| Abstract | Introduction: Nutrition plays a crucial role in the development and growth of young people as well as in the improvement of performance in sports, thus being important the following on nutritional recommendations for the achievement of maximum sports performance and the maintenance of optimal health in short and long term. The main goal of this study was the evaluation of the nutritional intake in young aerobics and acrobatic Portuguese female gymnasts, attempting to establish if there is a difference between the two sports categories. Besides this, we intend to compare the nutritional intake with the existing recommendations. Materials and methods: Methods and sample: 30 female athletes took part in this study, the majority practicing acrobatics gymnastics. The anthropometric evaluation was obtained of each athlete and the food intake was estimated with the help of a daily food log completed over 3 days. Results:18,2% of the sample has shown to have a lower CHO intake than the recommended (3-8g/kg body weight/day), also noting that this intake is higher among the acrobatics athletes (p<0,05). The sugar and fat intake, including saturated fat is above the recommended figures, and is also significantly higher in acrobatic gymnastics (p<0,05). Protein content is recorded as adequate in 45,5% of the sample, and the recommended intake (1,2-1,8g/kg body weight/day) being exceeded by approximately one third of athletes. The micronutrient intake of which the deficit is higher in young iii athletes – namely iron, calcium and vitamin D – is also below the recommended in 96,7%, 90,0% and 56,6% of our sample, respectively. Conclusion: This data suggests that the athletes have inadequate intakes, this being plausibly compromising their health and performance. Thus, nutritional education and the intervention of a nutritionist are essentials in this context. |
