| Abstract | Purpose – Analyse of impact of health system financing source (private insurance) on health system resources and outcomes. Design/Methodology/approach – European OECD countries were divided into two group A – countries with a significant impact of private health insurance and group B – rest. Author used a statistical test to determine if there is a significant differences between the groups in scope of health system resources (expenditures, number of physicians and hospital beds per 1000 inhabitants) and health outcomes (life expectancy, selfreported health status, barriers in access to healthcare). Findings – Countries in group A spend more their GDP on heath but they achieve almost same health system resources level (number of physicians, hospital beds) as B-group countries. There is a small advantage in percepted health system quality and significant lower access-barriers than in group B. Originality/value – this article is a new look on private health insurance impact on health system resources and outcomes. It takes in consideration all functions of private insurance in health system – primary, substitutive, complementary and supplementary. |
