| Abstract | North Korea has initiated a series of nuclear crises in the last decade for multiple purposes, but one of the most central is to “rock the boat” and bring the U.S. and other regional states to the negotiation table. In addition to their effect on regional security and balance of power, these events also have a significant impact on non-security realms. For instance, in financial circles, the term “Korea discount” is used to describe foreign investors’ reluctance to pay for the South Korean stocks,1 South Korea’s low equity valuations,2 and economic activities in the country that have been affected by the threat of instability from North Korea. From a financial expert survey, some conclude that “North Korea’s provoking acts have been the most important factor in producing the longand mid-term uncertainty in the Korean market.”3 |
