| Abstract | The Subsurface Equatorial Countercurrent system-Steadiness and extent of the Subsurface South Equatorial Countercurrent in the Atlantic Ocean.- Besides the surface equatorial countercurrents that are submitted to noticeable seasonal variations, there is, in the thermocline layer, a subsurface equatorial countercurrent system, the central linh, of which is the Equatorial Undercurrent; on both sides of the equator, almost symmetrically located, two additional subsurface countercurrents are found, at about 30-50 latitude, between 150 and 400 meters deep and even deeper.
