| Abstract | The application of fire in land-use systems is widespread in Brazil, causing economic, social and environmental losses. The degradation of air quality as a result of emissions from the biomass burning is associated with several negative impacts, including health damage to the exposed population. Despite being scarce, some studies relate the occurrence of critical events of anthropogenic biomass burning activity with health damage, indicated by an increase in the register of attendances and hospitalization or mortality. Objective: To describe and analyze time distribution of hot spot detected by satellite and hospitalizations for respiratory and circulatory problems in children and elderly residents in the municipality of Rio Branco, Acre, respectively, during the burning season, between 2000 and 2006. Methodology:Public data released by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) and the SUS Information Department (DATASUS) were used. Comparisons were made between the descriptive graphic patterns of variables distribution and a statistical analysis of trend, noting the interannual changes in its increments. Results: The hot spot detected in Rio Branco occurred mainly in August and September. During the study period, 2005 was the year that had the highest incidence of hot spot. Looking at the annual increments of monthly average of hot spot and prevalence of hospital admissions for respiratory problems in children between 1 and 4 years old and circulatory problems in elderly above 65 years, during the burning season, it was observed that the highest increases (317 %, 168%, 85%) and the largest reductions (-87%, -65%, -42%) were observed between 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 respectively, except for the reduction in the prevalence of respiratory problems in children, which showed the largest decrease between 2001/2002. |
