| Abstract | Ever since we accepted the possibility of a more perfect society we have had to grapple with the difficulties of understanding and solving the social problems that bestride the paths to that objective. Furthermore, these difficulties only have increased as we rejected prayer and myth and substituted science and reason as the more likely paths. One result has been seemingly endless scientific controversies over the definitions of social problems, theoretical perspectives, and ideological assumptions on the one side, and a succession of popular myths about the presumed causes of social problems on the other. Nor is there any reason to believe that science has even managed to modify these myths in some progressive fashion so that we might take some small comfort from such gains. |
