EnglishAfter the Concordat of 1753 and the achievement of the right to present the benefices previously reserved by the Pope, Spanish monarchs had permission to deal with the design of a model of clergy according to their interests. During the reign of King Charles III of Spain, while the Crown was undertaking a desired educational reform, the sovereign made use of his new prerogatives in the selection of the beneficial clergy, to mould the level of training of these individuals. This current work analyses the education of the ecclesiastic members designated by this monarch for benefices as important as they were the capitular prebends, in particular those of the chapters of the ecclesiastical province of Toledo. We are interested in their level of studies, the centres in which they carried them out and the disciplines they had chosen, as well as the preferences of the Crown in this sense. With this aim, we have used the supply documents of these prebends. |
