| Abstract | The acute and subchronic oral toxicity of ethanolic extracts of simple ascidian Microcosmus exasperatus Heller, 1878 in Wistar rats were investigated using standard procedure. 24 hours oral acute toxicity studies did not show any mortality up to a dose of 2000 mg/kg bw, indicating that the LD50 is higher than 2000 mg/kg. Gross behavioural changes like irritability, tremor, laboured breathing, staggering and convulsion were observed only above a dose of 1000 mg/kg bw. No mortality was observed during subchronic toxicity studies administering a dose of 100, 500, 1000, 2000 mg/kg bw for fourteen days. Liver and kidney function tests performed on the blood samples indicated no toxic effect. Keywords: Microcosmus exasperatus, acute, chronic, toxicity, liver, kidney. |
