| Abstract | Aphyric and sparsely plagioclase-clinopyroxene phyric basalts were drilled during Leg 54 on the East Pacific Rise and OCP Ridge near the rise crest. Aphyric basalts have TiO2/Al2O3 = 0.6-0.4 and SiO2/TiO2 = 27-44, which are typical of basalts of mid-oceanic ridges and fracture zones of marginal seas. Plagioclase-pyroxene phyric basalts have TiO2/Al2O3 = 0.17-0.20 and SiO2/TiO2 = 18-20; in these respects they are similar to some oceanic-island basalts. Tholeiitic basalts from island arcs form yet a third fundamental basalt type. |
