| Abstract | Outburst of violence in the Middle East are often associated with the Muslim doctrine of jihad, which is usually translated "holy war." Like many religious terms which connote violence, for example, sacrifice, victim, retribution, divine wrath, and the like, jihad must be understood in the broader semiotic context of Islamic discourse and world views from which it derives its primary meanings. The historical contexts in which the call for jihad has been efficacious provide case studies for the analysis of religious discourse on violence. |
