| Abstract | This chapter summarizes the progress made towards the Millennium Development Goals in Latin America and the Caribbean. The analysis considers the progress made in the region as a whole and in five groups of countries. The Latin American countries, Cuba, Dominican Republic and Haiti were divided into four groups based on their levels of human development, while the fifth group consists of all the other Caribbean countries and territories (see box VIII.1). This analysis of each group’s progress towards the Goals reveals that, although the region’s less developed countries have experienced greater difficulty than the ones with intermediate and high levels of development in reducing extreme poverty and hunger, they have nevertheless made significant headway in these areas. Consequently, it appears that more domestic and external resources are needed to complement the efforts being made in the countries of the region that are lagging furthest behind. |
