| Abstract | The Ebrie lagoon is a coastal tropical lagoon of Ivory Coast which is faced with eutrophication problems due to sewage. In order to solve them, there is a need for a better knowledge of the factors which control the sestonic biomass and among them, nutrients. Sestonic biomass is generally and effectively limited by P in the most continental regions of the lagoon. In estuarine regions, N is the most often limiting nutrient but this limitation is only potential due to the influence of non-nutritive factors. In all regions, the frequency of N limitation increases during the dry season. These geographical and seasonal variations are directly affected by the nutrient content of water flowing into the lagoon. Oceanic waters are clearly limited by N. Waters coming from the savannah area are also limited by N, but less intensely. Waters flowing from forested areas are limited by P. A simple index is proposed, which allows an estimation of the intensity of nutrient limitation. The mean values kQN = 0.089 at N/at C and kQP = 0.0055 at P/at C for the internal subsistence quota in the lagoon Ebrie seston, which were proposed in a earlier paper, are confirmed. |
