Abstract	With the aim of catching up the changes that the new technologies bring to our society, the governments have begun to use social media in their communicational strategies with citizens, for the most part, assiduous users of these new online tools. This article brings the concept of mass self-communication, studied by Manuel Castells for researching the new communication process characteristics, it explores the theoretical contributions that fundament the challenge of using the new technologies in governmental communication, and it also gives statistics information about the use of social media in Argentina.
